Treatment of Pre Diabetes

  • Exercise regularly: Doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times per week. This could be a power walk, swimming, a bike ride or an aerobics class.
  • Lose weight:  Studies show that losing just 5 to 10 percent of your total body weight can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Take medication as indicated: Depending on blood glucose levels and diabetes risk, patients may be prescribed oral diabetes drugs such as metformin (Glucophage) or acarbose (Precose). Cholesterol and/or blood pressure medications may be indicated as well. However, healthy lifestyle choices remain the most critical step in preventing and managing diabetes.
