Weight Lifting and Diabetic Diet Reduce Health Risks

Researchers from Brooks College of Health at the University of Florida have found that regular sessions of pumping iron significantly reduces the risk for health conditions like heart disease and diabetes – results that were recently reported in the New York Daily News.

Scientists at the university studied data from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Out of more than 5,600 test subjects, nearly nine percent said they lifted weights regularly. The majority of those who participated in strength training were men under the age of 50.

Of those who kept up regular weight lifting sessions, researchers found a much lower incidence of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for other diseases later in life. High blood pressure, a large waist circumference, high triglycerides, high cholesterol and insulin resistance are all factors included in metabolic syndrome.

Diabetes diet for weight loss can reduce risk factors

Waist circumference is a key factor in metabolic syndrome, which means shedding excess pounds may reduce the risk. In fact, even those already diagnosed with type II diabetes can use proper diet guidelines in combination with exercise and weight training to effectively stop or reverse pre diabetes.

In addition to reducing risk factors for metabolic syndrome, regular weight lifting has been shown to increase weight loss benefits, especially when combined with healthy, low-calorie meal plan. Those who pump iron regularly build lean muscle, which is a natural fat burner. By simply increasing the amount of lean muscle in the body, one can effectively rev up the metabolism for more efficient calorie burning.

Now, it appears resistance training offers yet another benefit when added to a pre diabetes diet plan.
