The Best Diabetic Diet Plan

A diabetic diet plan, which is often referred to as a medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is not nearly as complex a medical concept as it may sound. It refers simply to a healthy diet, distributed over regular, fixed mealtimes, that allows diabetes and pre-diabetes patients to control their blood sugar levels and control their weight.

The diabetes diet is no more or less than a diet that would benefit anyone, whether or not they are diabetic, or in danger of becoming so. The standard diabetic diet plan is made up of nutritious foods that are low in fat and calories, and favors fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

When people who have diabetes eat excess calories or fat, the glucose level in their blood can rise to unhealthy and dangerous levels. Serious health complications can follow, such as hyperglycemia, or serious damage to the nerves, kidney, or heart. Individuals with the most common type of diabetes, type 2, are often aided in their quest to lower blood glucose levels by losing weight.

For patients who are pre-diabetic, losing weight can go a long way toward reversing their condition.

Keys to a successful diabetic diet plan:

  • Choose your carbs wisely: Sugars and starches break down into blood glucose during digestion. Choose healthy carbohydrates instead, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, peas, and low-fat dairy.
  • Pick fish over meat: Fish is a great alternative to higher-fat meats. Fish that are high in omega 3 fatty acids, such as salmon, help lower cholesterol.
  • Not all fats are bad: Some foods like avocados, almonds, walnuts, olives, and olive oils have fats that, consumed in moderation, decrease cholesterol.

What to avoid on a diabetic diet plan

  • Saturated fats (high-fat dairy, hot dogs, sausage, bacon),
  • Trans fats
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium
