The holiday season is in full-swing – packed with family gatherings, parties and the usual festivities that bring joy to this special time of year. With a little advanced planning, diabetics can join in on the holiday fun with these ten easy diabetes diet tips for the holidays.

  1. Family is the highlight of any holiday celebration, not food. Use this time to focus on quality time with your loved ones, whether it’s catching up on the good old days, volunteering for a local charity, or enjoying a walk outside.
  2. Plan ahead. If you know you may be tempted by holiday treats, fill-up in advance with plenty of healthy foods to minimize your cravings.

  9. If you eat too much, get back on track right away. Don’t punish yourself for a little overindulgence during the holidays. Stay positive; focus on friends and family, and go back to your healthy eating habits the next day.
  10. Monitor blood sugar levels. If you’re taking insulin or another medication, be sure to check your blood glucose levels regularly during the holidays.
