According to a recent study released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. is growing at an alarming rate. The study, which was released on November 15, 2012, states that in 18 states, the cases of diagnosed diabetes increased by 100%. Cases also increased by at least 50% or more in 42 states.
About 22 million Americans have a diagnosed case of type 2 diabetes, according to The Center for Medical Weight Loss. That figure does not include those with other types of diabetes. The Center also notes that about 57 million Americans have pre diabetes, which means that they are at a high risk of developing the disease.
Diabetes rates associated with geography
The report from the CDC noted that the increases in diabetes rates were associated with certain geographical locations. Southern states have seen the highest rise in diabetes cases. The West, Midwest, and Northeast have followed suit, in that order. Some of the states that have seen the biggest increases include:
