Weight Lifting May Reduce Risk of Diabetes

Studies have shown that the quickest way to lose weight is to combine a low-calorie diet with both aerobic exercise and resistance training. Now, new research indicates that the benefits of working the biceps extend beyond basic weight loss and muscle strength. Researchers from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and the University of Southern Denmark have now found a direct link between regular strength training and a lower incidence of type II diabetes.

While a diabetic diet is still a core component to reducing diabetes risk, it appears that combining the right menu with regular sessions with the weights can reap even more benefit.

Quickest Way To Lose Weight: Under Doctor Supervision

The evidence from this study is compelling, and it isn’t surprising to physicians who work with patients to find the best way to lose weight. Doctors at The Center for Medical Weight Loss have found that patients who learn methods of fast weight loss through a combination of a diabetic diet and exercise can often reverse the effects of type II diabetes.

“We see diabetic patients all the time who lose weight and no longer need insulin,” Dr. Michael Kaplan of The Center for Medical Weight Loss stated. “When patients lose 5-10 percent of their body weight, it is a given that they will reduce their blood sugar significantly; many no longer need medication.”

How Weight Training Supplements a Diabetic Diet

Researchers from both locations studied 32,000 men over a period of 18 years. They discovered that the men in the study who participated in weight lifting at least two-and-a-half hours each week were 34 percent less likely to develop type II diabetes. Those who spent less time at the machines or on the bench could also lower the risk of the condition, but less time meant lower percentages respectively.

In addition, researchers learned that men who combined 150 minutes of aerobic activity with 150 minutes of weight training weekly reduced their risk of type II diabetes by as much as 59 percent.
